English education has been paid great attention in China
for a long time. Although the using of English language is not widespread as it
should be. In China, people have more chances to read English than to speak or write
it. Many people may need to read English materials at work, but speaking is not
necessary. You can seldom hear people speak English in public in China either.
Most of primary schools in China start English education
from early year grade, such as Year 1-3. English education is so popular in
China. However, the way of English be taught has been criticized all the time.
The main problem is, the teaching method is rigid. Students
have to mechanically memorizing the grammar or vocabulary monotonously. The
textbooks are rigid either. For young people, they can hardly to communicate
with foreigners appropriately by what they’ve just learned from the textbooks!
For example, we can say “get the door” to express to get the door opened, but in
an English textbook, “open the door” maybe is the only correct answer for it.
In recent years, as Chinese economy developed, more and more
people travel or study abroad. Under such circumstances, more and more high-quality
after-class English lessons have been organized by relevant agencies and have
been introducing more advance and practical English education to Chinese
students.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I think the another problem is rigid censor in China. Consequently, students couldn't find wide range of appropriate study books.
ReplyDeleteEnglish has many ways to express. So, we need to learn many expression through different experiences such as speaking, reading and so on.
ReplyDeleteWe have same problems in Japan. It is necessary to get high score at the exams, but to speak and listen English are more important in the future.
ReplyDeleteI feel it is very hard for Chiness to studying English because of diffirent way in writing. However your English is very good. Congratulation.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the teaching style you mentioned, I think it would be good if the English teachers in your country need to be open minded in considering not to give formal English conversation but also street or informal English conversation. I agree sometimes it is very different, the one they teach us in the classroom with the one outside the classroom.
