English in Vietnam

English in Vietnam

The more our societies develop, the more we understand the importance of English. In the rapid globalization nowadays, English is not only considered one of the most convenient means of communication but also a significant factor in trading activities, political and cultural exchanges among countries all over the world. Vietnamese government soon realize the indispensable role of English, therefore have issued relevant policies regarding to English teaching and using in many different fields.

In comparison with ten years ago when English was taught only from secondary schools and not in all regions of Vietnam, English language is now drawing more and more attraction of people. It is being taught in almost all levels of schools. English has also been being considered as one of three compulsory subjects which are the condition for all high school and university entry. To my knowledge, there are some different ways of teaching English in Vietnam. The first one is that teachers explain the vocabulary, grammar and assign the exercises or homework for pupils. There is nearly no interaction between teachers and learners. In addition, listening and speaking skills are also less focused comparing with other skills. Although this kind of giving English lectures does not corresponds to the modern development of education, a number of schools in Vietnam are still using it as the standard for English training. The reason of this mainly comes from the limitation of teachers' knowledge, skills and the poverty of education facilities in some regions of Vietnam. The other type of English teaching in Vietnam is the offline classes which are full of interaction between lecturers and pupils and among pupils themselves. English is naturally well acquired day by day by practising all skills of English. The possitive result of this kind of class is that learners will  be more proficient in general. However, we only see this in private schools or high-quality state-owned schools. The other important type of English teaching nowadays that we should not forget to mention is online courses. This is especially suitable for those who, for any reasons, can not go to the classes. Online studying has become a trend because of its convenience and effectiveness.

As well as education, English has been being used commonly in almost every aspects in Vietnam. Apart from trading, political and cultural exchanges, it plays an significant part in daily business. We use English in term of exchanging emails, chats and working procedures, regulations, etc. Therefore, it is obvious that the person who is better at English has more opportunities in his job. Besides, in all government's summits or in the meetings of any enterprises, we can easily realize the association of Vietnamese and English as a necessary part.

In conclusion, I believe that English is now the most attractive foreign language in Vietnam. In other words, in order to have more chances of jobs and other benefits, it is necessary to be fluent in English by appropriate teaching and studying skills.
