Anyone who has been studying English since graduating from high school in Japan may have felt it once, there are many issues with English education in Japan. Japanese English education focuses on "understanding" rather than "use", so many people can hardly speak English even though they have studied English for many years. This essay will discuss in detail what kind of issues there are.
First, there is a problem with the content of the lesson centered on vocabulary and grammar. Of course, both are very important in studying English, but Japan is too focused on it. A class that just memorize vocabulary and grammar is very boring, and many Japanese people tend to have a feeling of being not good at English and hate it. Motivation is very important in doing something, and having negative emotions is very problem.
In addition, because of the influence of English education to pass the exam, we are very concerned about whether it is correct or not. So we never try to use English in daily life. We do not try to speak in English outside of class as well as in class, even though it is very important for us in learning English.
The output is very important for studying English. Japanese English education tend to be very biased in the four skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) of English, and should be improved. And Japan should have a class that has a positive feeling for English.
I am so surprised by this information, especially that some Japanese hate English lessons. As for me, I envy the knowledge of Japanese students of English grammar.
ReplyDeleteI can not agree with you more. There are many issues in English education in many countries. We focus on the exam while we ignore the real important thing in learning English.
ReplyDeleteIt is difficult especially when English is not your first language. We often do the same in Vanuatu especially when the teacher is not around, we tend to use our mother tongue a lot even though it is forbidden in class.
ReplyDeleteFrom your ideas, I think English education in Japan is almost the same with Vietnam. Let's hope for more effective ways of learning and teaching English in the near future.
ReplyDeleteI like the way you write. It's simply natural.
