In Viet Nam, English hasn't been recognised as the secondary language. However, it displays a more and more important role in the ordinary life.
English is taught in the majority of public secondary schools upwards, meanwhile other languages such as Russian, Chinese, French are taught in the minority of schools. In the private schools, pupils may learn English since they enter shool and English is the major language using in the international schools.
In the urban area, English is highly considered. Beside English lesson in the class, most pupils attend extra English class in the well equipped language centers. In the rural area, few pupils can study English outside their schools owing to unfavourable conditions.
English is the main subject in almost colleges or universities. Students have to obtain a certain English qualifications before graduating. English qualification is also the madatory certificate attached to students' job application.
Though English is widely taught in the schools, universities, it is not commonly used in the daily life except in the offices or in some tourist attraction places. Some scientists suggested the Government to regconige English as the secondary language in Viet Nam to encourage studying English as well as to stimulate foreign tourist and investment. This subject is still in debate among the scholars before it is widely voted by the public.
